  1. Winter tyre requirement begins

Winter tyres must be used in December, January and February regardless of road conditions (Road Traffic Act). Check the tread depth and tyre pressures at the same time – low pressures increase consumption.

  2. The carbon dioxide tax on fuels is falling

Second stage of the carbon dioxide tax reduction: the CO2 tax on petrol falls from 15,85 to 14,31 c/l and on diesel from 18,12 to 16,36 c/l (Government Proposal HE 132/2025, approved by Parliament in November 2025).

  3. The distribution obligation rises to 22.5%

Distributors of transport fuels must supply renewable fuels for consumption of at least 22,5 % in 2027 (19,5 % in 2026).

  4. 2027 travel expense reimbursements take effect

Tax-free mileage allowances and daily allowances are confirmed each calendar year by a decision of the Finnish Tax Administration. In 2026 the mileage allowance is 55 cents/km; check the 2027 amounts from the Finnish Tax Administration.

Frequently asked questions: Fuel Radar

How much do petrol and diesel cost now?

In the week of 28 Sep 2026, the average price of 95E10 petrol was €2.331/l and diesel €2.523/l (EU Weekly Oil Bulletin). According to Statistics Finland, the average prices in September 2026 were €2.3/l and €2.4/l.

Why is diesel now more expensive than petrol?

The tax on diesel is lower, but its tax-free product price has risen more: on 28.9.2026 the product price and margin of diesel was 1.477 €/l and of petrol 1.156 €/l. Over a year diesel became 49.1 % more expensive and petrol 30.1 %.

How much of the price of fuel is tax?

In the week of 28 Sep 2026, taxes accounted for 50.4% of the price of petrol and 41.4% of diesel. The price includes excise duty (energy content and carbon dioxide tax), the security of supply fee and 25.5% value added tax.

Will fuel taxation change in 2027?

Yes. The carbon dioxide tax falls on 1.1.2027: by 1.54 cents/l for petrol and 1.76 cents/l for diesel. At the same time the distribution obligation rises from 19.5% to 22.5%, which may affect the price in the other direction.

Can I fill up an old car with 95E10?

E10 suits most petrol cars. For a car registered before 2012, it is worth checking suitability in the owner's manual. 98E5 suits all petrol cars.

What is the best time to refuel?

According to KKV researchers, the cheapest prices fell mainly between Sunday and Tuesday, and the price can rise by 12% on average within 24 hours. The cheap days now vary weekly, so it is worth following prices.

Can a business deduct the VAT on fuel?

A VAT-liable business can deduct the VAT on fuel to the extent the vehicle is used in taxable business. For a passenger car, the deduction is made for the share corresponding to business use, so it is worth keeping a driving log.

How much does fuel cost in Finland compared with the rest of the EU?

In the week of 28 Sep 2026, petrol in Finland was 10.8% and diesel 12.8% more expensive than the EU average. The EU average prices were €2.104/l (petrol) and €2.237/l (diesel), and Finland's €2.331/l and €2.523/l (EU Weekly Oil Bulletin).

What is the mileage allowance in 2026?

The tax-free mileage allowance for a private car is 55 cents per kilometre. Supplements can also be paid, for example 9 cents/km for a trailer and 4 cents/km for each passenger. The domestic full daily allowance is 54 € and the partial daily allowance 25 € (Finnish Tax Administration decision 2026).

What is the distribution obligation and does it affect the price?

The distribution obligation requires fuel distributors to blend renewable components into fuels. The obligation is 19.5% in 2026, 22.5% in 2027 and 31% in 2028 (Energy Authority). Renewable components are usually more expensive than fossil ones, so a higher obligation may raise prices.

How much does light fuel oil cost?

According to Statistics Finland, the average price of light fuel oil in September 2026 was about €2.0/l, 64.2% higher than a year earlier. In June 2026 the price was €1.67/l.

How much is the power-source tax on a diesel car?

The power-source tax on a diesel-powered passenger car is 5.5 cents per day for each started 100 kilograms. For example, for a car weighing 1 500 kg it is about €301 a year on top of the basic tax (Veronmaksajat). You can check the tax on your own car with Traficom.

Tips

How to use the information

  1. Follow the price before refuelling: according to FCCA researchers, the price has often been lowest between Sunday and Tuesday, but the timing of cheap days now varies from week to week.
  2. Check tyre pressures at least once a month – according to Liikenneturva, low pressures can increase consumption by as much as 3–6 %.
  3. Drive anticipatively at a steady speed and use cruise control; even a one-litre drop in average consumption saves about 500 € with 20 000 km of driving a year (Autoliitto, at 2022 prices).
  4. Remove unnecessary load and the roof box when you do not need them – they increase consumption through air resistance and weight.
  5. Make use of the loyalty and app benefits of fuel chains if you often fill up at the same chain, and compare the benefit with the price difference between stations.
  6. In companies, a fuel card and a centralised contract often give a per-litre discount and make bookkeeping easier. Calculate fleet costs without VAT.
  7. The price difference between diesel and petrol varies: in September 2026 diesel was about 19 cents per litre more expensive than petrol (2.523 vs. 2.331 €/l). When comparing cars, calculate not only fuel but also the diesel power-source tax, which for a 1 500 kg car is about €301 a year.
  8. Pay for work-related driving as a mileage allowance only for documented trips: the driving log records the date, route, kilometres and purpose of the trip. The tax-free allowance is 55 cents/km in 2026.
  9. If an employee drives a lot in their own car, compare the annual total of mileage allowances with the costs of a company benefit car or company car. Driving 30,000 km a year costs €16,500 in mileage allowances.
  10. Consumption grows in winter: warm the car with a block heater in frosty weather and avoid idling. Winter tyres are mandatory from December to February.
